Joyce’s Internet Pet Peeve

If there’s one way a website can aggravate Joyce, it’s by automatically playing music or voice when she visits the page.  I’m willing to bet you’ve had the same experience.  You visit a webpage and without you asking, a video starts playing or an audio recording starts pouring out of your speakers.  What can you do?

You could just keep your computer’s sound off all the time but that sort of defeats the purpose of having speakers, don’t you agree?  There’s a better way.  You can use a browser which allows you to mute the sound on the tab which is open or a browser which automatically mutes the audio or video.  Here’s a breakdown:

These browsers give you a speaker in the tab of the webpage you’re visiting and you can mute the audio by clicking on the speaker:  Microsoft Edge and Firefox.  Here’s what that looks like:

These browsers automatically mute the audio for you (in most cases):  Opera, Google Chrome, Vivaldi.

These browsers simply allow the audio or video to play:  AOL Gold Desktop, Safari and Internet Explorer (which you should not longer be using anyway).

There you have it – a simple way to not get aggravated by audio you didn’t want!
