Model/Serial Numbers

At our seminar this past Saturday, we talked about my blog series on keeping your laptop secure. (Delete Your Laptop? and Scrambled Eggs & Data) Since one of my suggestions is that you write down the model and serial numbers of your laptop and keep them in a secure place, people asked how they can find that information.

On a iMac, it’s very easy to find the serial number. Just go to the apple in the upper left-hand corner and, from the drop-down menu, click “About This Mac.” On the window which pop-ups up, you’ll see the serial number listed.

Using the serial number listed on this Overview window, you can find the model number by visiting Apple’s “Check Your Service And Support” page found HERE.

On a Windows machine, there are a few more steps to finding the model and serial number but it’s not complicated. I’ve created a video showing the correct procedure. Although the video is about Windows 10, the same procedure will also work in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. The video is only 2 1/2 minutes long, so have a look and then try it on your computer!
