In my post titled “Doxxed,” I mentioned that one step in protecting yourself from being doxxed was to keep your computer locked if it was in an area where others might access it. Just in case you’ve never locked your computer and have no idea how to do that, I’m here to rescue you.
Let’s start with Windows 10. There are a number of ways to lock your computer, both manually and automatically. I’ve created a video for you to view. The video explains four ways of locking your Windows 10 machine.
Although the video is specific for Windows 10, you’ll find that you can also apply most of them to Windows 8.1. I should add that you can also use the keyboard combination of CTRL+ALT+DELETE and choose Lock from the menu. That combination works for Windows 10, 8.1 and 7.
How about a iMac? Yes, you can lock your iMac, too.
First, if you want something similar to the Windows screensaver lock, do this:
- Open System Preferences and find “Security & Privacy”
- On the “General” tab, put a check mark in “Require password” and from the drop-down menu, choose “immediately.”
- Next, adjust how much idle time it will take for your Mac to go to sleep. In System Preferences, go to “Energy Saver.”
- Set the time you want your Mac and the display to go to sleep.
You can also use a keyboard combination to lock your computer. However, that combination is different depending on the age of your Mac. If you have an older Mac, press CONTROL+SHIFT+EJECT to lock your computer. Newer Macs use the combination CONTROL+SHIFT+POWER.
