At our seminar on Saturday (October 20, 2018), we talked about using Acronis True Image software (see button below if you want to purchase it!) to create a mirror image of a computer’s hard drive.
What is a mirror image and why would you want to create one?
Of course, we always use online backup for the data on our computers. This way, documents, pictures, videos, favorites, etc., are available in case something goes wrong. However, if something catastrophic happened to our computer (hard drive failure, for example), it would be very time consuming to reinstalling the Operating System and all the programs that we were using. In fact, if you’re like me, you may have some programs that you no longer have access to the installation files and wouldn’t be able to reinstall them if they were gone. A resolution to this issue is a mirror image backup.
A mirror image is exactly what it sounds like – it’s an exact copy of everything that is on your computer’s hard drive. This includes partitions, drive letters, operating system, data, etc. With a mirror image, you could have your computer back up and running in a few hours instead of days.
You need three items to make a mirror image of your computer: 1) Acronis True Image software; 2) An external hard drive; 3) A USB Flash Drive. The software is what creates the image; the external hard drive is where you save the image; and, the USB drive is where you create the boot files to recover your mirror image.
Creating an image backup is easy. Here’s a video from Acronis which is a brief overview of the procedure. (Although this is about version 2017, it’s identical to the process in version 2019.)
