You’re right. I’m not talking about the monster in Young Frankenstein! Instead, I’m talking about a new feature in the Google Chrome browser. It’s called Live Caption. It will give you live captions for both videos and audios. Perhaps the most impressive feature of this option is that it will even do so for offline videos and audio files if you play them in the Google browser.
Here’s an example of how it works:
In my video, notice the black box which appears near the bottom and the text of what I’m saying shows up. This is very helpful for those people who may be hard of hearing or for those who just like to read along as they listen to a video.
Currently, the feature is off by default. To turn it on, just follow these steps:
- In the upper right-hand corner of Google Chrome, click or press the three vertical dots.
- On the menu which appears, choose Settings
- In the left column of the next window, click or tap Advanced.
- Under Advanced, choose Accessibility.
- Turn on Live Caption.
Live Caption is now on so go watch some videos and see how it works. Like most caption services, it’s not perfect in translating what you’re saying but it’s pretty darn good. Go ahead, give it a try.
Thanks John,
Very helpful, (as usual), as I’m a little hard of hearing, as my wife says!
Charlie…don’t all wives say their husbands are hard of hearing? LOL I’m glad you found the post helpful. It’s a neat option! ~John
